With illustration her main subject, Joy Stanley Ricketts graduated from art college in 1950, went straight into the theatre and then television as a stage and costume designer.

A spell at home after her marriage and the birth of her two daughters she developed an interest in horses, which resulted in commissions for equestrian portraits. For twenty years she exhibited annually at the Badminton Horse Trials and the Royal Windsor Horse Show, graduating from children's ponies to the Queen's famous stallions as her portrait subjects, entailing trips to Europe and the USA.

After the death of her husband and a period of Spanish Landscape painting she began to specialise in miniatures. Now a full member of the three main UK miniature societies and one in the US she has added portrait work for antiquarian book binders and making old master paintings for dolls house collectors to her out put.
