Artwork on a Theme Award 2026 – The Legend of King Arthur
We’re delighted to announce that the theme for our Artwork on a Theme Award 2026 is The Legend of King Arthur.
This year’s theme has been inspired by the visit of renowned archaeologist and BBC Coast presenter Professor Mark Horton during the Cirencester History Festival. Professor Horton will officially open our exhibition and present the 2026 Awards. He will also be giving a special lecture at the Bingham Hall, Cirencester, on Saturday 1 November, exploring the same fascinating theme.

Cirencester and the Arthurian Myth
A Quest for Camelot with Professor Mark Horton
Could Camelot have been here in Cirencester?
In this fascinating talk, Professor Mark Horton takes us back to the turbulent years of late fifth-century Britain to explore one of history’s greatest mysteries. As Roman Britain gave way to the Saxon age, was there a real leader whose story inspired the legend of King Arthur?
Drawing on the latest archaeological discoveries, Professor Horton examines the evidence behind the myth, making a compelling case that Camelot—and perhaps even the Round Table—may have been closer to Cirencester than anyone imagined.
Whether you’re interested in archaeology, history or Arthurian legend, this promises to be a memorable evening.
Tickets for the talk will be available from September on the Cirencester History Festival website.
After the talk, join us for a celebratory drink as we round off the festival in style. The bar will be open, the folk quartet Feast of Fools will perform an Arthurian-inspired set, and a selection of the finest Arthurian-themed miniatures from our exhibition will be on display and available to purchase. The Miniature Exhibition continues at the Alliston Centre Growth hub until 12pm Monday 2nd November.
