Valerie Greeley Ba(Hons) RMS., HS.

I studied textile design and graduated with a first class BA (Hons) in 1975. I have always been fascinated with pattern and intricate detail, being naturally drawn to painting small scale.

My inspiration comes from nature; the markings on a butterfly’s wing, sunlight on fur, are never ending source of fascination and delight. My background in textile design has encouraged an interest in the applied arts and I like to incorporate decorative elements in my work to enhance the narrative. I am fascinated by Indian and Persian miniatures and their use of pigments and gilding, these influences can be seen in my later works.

My book illustrations have been published by Blackie and Son Ltd, Collins, Penguin etc. and more recently by Long Barn Books. I have worked extensively in the greeting card industry and with ceramic manufacturers both here and in the USA. I have also created ranges of fabric designs for the home and quilting industries.

My miniatures have won various RMS awards including; Best Group Award, Gold Bowl Honourable Mention, The Elizabeth Meek Award. Also the President’s Choice Award (HS) and The Nicholas Hilliard Award (HS)
